Individual Note:
     Emigrated in 1909/10 through New York to New Castle, PA, probably to avoid the draft into Italian military service. He was the oldest child. When he first came to New York he bought Limburger Cheese, but couldn't eat it, so he ate bread and onions instead. {conversation with Pansy Martini Pionati during a summer visit}

The ship manifest for the SS San Giovanni lists Eugeino Martini, 17, laborer. The ship sailed from Naples on March 20, 1910 and arrived at the Port of New York on April 14, 1910. He can read and write. His nationality is Italian from Italy-south from the town of Sgurgola. Nearest relative in natave country: Father, Antonio Martini in Sgurgola. Final destination: Oswego, NY to join cousin Antonio Martini at 41 Albany Street, Oswego, NY. He paid for his own ticket and has a ticket to Oswego. He has $16. He had never been in the U.S. before. He answered NO to the following questions: Ever been in prison? No. Whether a polygamist? No. and Whether an anarchist? No. He was in good health. He is 5 feet 6 inches tall, with brown hair eyes and skin. Further observation of the ship's manifest reveals that many Sgurgolan's traveled to New York on this same ship. Eugenio's cousin, Angelomana Corsi also made the trip and he's bound for the same cousin's home in Oswego. His father's name is Pasquale, also from Sgurgola.

Eugenio Martini is not found in the 1910 census probably since he had been in the U.S. for only four days when the US Census was taken. His cousin, Tony Martins, 25, was found at 201 W Utica Street, Oswego, NY living with his wife, Mary, 17, and daughter, Jennie, 1. They have been married two years and have one child. Tony was born in Italy, immigrated in 1903. He is a track welder on the steam rail road. They live with Jennie's father: Tony Custer, 56 b. in Italy immigrated 1894, he a flagman on the railroad. Also living with them are Jennie's sister and her family. (April 18, 1910, E.D. 135; Sheet 4A).[Research note: the Custers are actually originally "Castiglio" later the name is changed back to Castiglio.]

After arriving in New Castle, PA, he met Filomena Rizzo when she was only 14, and proposed to her. She promised to marry him when they got older.

The 1920 census lists Eugene Martini, 29, and his family living at 1212 Butler Avenue, New Castle, Lawrence Co., PA. Also living with him are his wife, Filomini, 21 and daughter, Pasqua, 1 year 9 months old. Eugene immigrated in 1910. He is a laborer in the cement industry. He was born in Italy as were his parents. Filomini and Pasqua were born in Pennsylvania. Filomini's parents were born in Italy. Italian is spoken in the home, but they can speak English. He owns the house but it is mortgaged. (January 8, 1920; E.D. 99-22; Sheet 11B)

The 1930 census lists Ug... Matino, 37, living at 1201 Butler Avenue, New Castle, Lawrence Co., PA. Also living with him are his wife, Phillonia, 30; daughters, Pansy, 12 and Beatrice, 10. He owns his house which is worth $10000. They have a radio. He is a merchant in a dry goods store. Mr. Martini was born in Italy with his parents and immigrated in 1909. All others born in PA, except Filomina's parents were born in Italy. He was 23 when first married and she was 16. Italian is spoken in the home. (April 14, 1930; E.D. 37-27; Sheet 11A, page 201).

from the New Castle News August 11, 1934 (p. 8): a building permit was issued to Eugene Martini at 1201 Butler Avenue for a frame addition.
