Howard Woodrow Shrimp, aged 55, of Dushore RD 2, died on November 5, 1968

Mr. Shrimp was born Sept. 15, 1912, in Forks Township, Sullivan County, and was a life long resident of that area. He was the son of the late Mannessa and Clara Rohe Shrimp. Mr. Shrimp has owned and operated his own farm most of his life and drove a Sullivan County school bus from 1939 until 1961. For the past five years, he was in failing health.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Sherman Shrimp; three daughters, Mrs. David (Rose) Edkin of Kent, N.Y.; Mrs. Raymond (Shirley) Richlin of Dushore RD1, and Mrs. Gene (Catherine) Carner of New Albany RD3; five sons, William of Kent, N.Y.; Robert of New Albany; and Edward, Gerald, and Howard Jr., all at home; three brothers, Walter of Dushore RD 2; Oscar of Bangor, Pa; and Arthur of Dushore RD; and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on November 8 at 1:30 p.m. from the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home in Dushore. The Rev. John Solliday, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church of Dushore officiated. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Dushore

     The 1830 census lists Abraham Woolever and his family living in Madison Twp., Columbia Co. PA. Abraham is between 20-30 years old. Others in the family are: one female 20-30; two females under 5. They live in the Jerseytown area. This research is not positive that this is actually the same family as below.

The 1840 census lists Abraham Wolheaver and his family living in Derry Twp. Columbia Co. PA. Abraham is between 30-40 years old. Others in the family are: one male under 5, one male between 5-10; one female under 5; 2 females 10-15; and one female 30-40.

The 1850 census has Abraham Wolliver and his family living in Anthony Twp. Montour Co. PA. Abraham is 49 a shoemaker and has $350. Living in the house also are Martha, 44, children: William 17, John, 15, Mary 12, Sam, 9; Ellen, 8; Martha, 6; and Edwin, one month. All children are attending school, except Edwin. (p. 421. October 30, 1850). Montour County was formed from parts of Columbia County in the late 1840s.

The 1860 census has Abraham Welliver and his family living in Anthony Twp., Montour Co. PA. Abraham is 59 and a shoemaker with $1200 in real estate and $225 in personal property. Also in the household are Martha 54, Samuel, 19; Ellen 17; Martha 15; and Edwin C. 10. All the children attend school. Post office is White Hall. (p. 19. June 8, 1860).

The 1870 census lists John Welliver, 69, and his family of Martha, 63 and Edwin, 19 living in Anthony Twp. Montour Co. PA. "John" is a farmer with $2600 in real estate and $800 in personal property. Also in the household are Martha, 63 and Edwin 19, who is a farm laborer. (June 18, 1870)

The 1880 census of Anthony Twp. Montour Co. PA lists Abraham Wooliver, 80, and his wife Martha 74 and a servant, Sarah B***d, age 16. They live just outside the village of White Hall. Abraham is a farmer born in Pennsylvania. His parents were born in New Jersey. (p. 2, June 8, 1880).

From the census data, we can assume that the two young females born prior to 1830 were their daughters to total nine children in the family.

     W. R. WELLIVER, merchant, Danville, was born February 3, 1834, in Jerseytown, Columbia Co., Penn., to Abraham and Martha (WINDER) WELLIVER, natives of Pennsylvania. His grandfather, a farmer, was an early settler of Columbia County, where his son (subject’s father) was born, and where he followed shoemaking in early life, but later farming. Our subject, the eldest of nine children, was reared on the farm and attended the district school, and also the academy at Millville, Columbia County. He was a diligent student and early began to teach, which profession he followed in the winter, and farmed in the summer for eight years, mostly in the country, but also several terms in Washingtonville. In 1863 he came to Danville and commenced business as a dealer in books and stationary, and so continued until 1867. In that year he began his present business (general merchandising), in which he has a good patronage, and keeps a large supply of goods. Mr. WELLIVER has been twice married; first in 1858 to Miss Sue, daughter of Peter WAGNER, and of German origin. She died in 1873, the mother of the following children: Lloyd, married and a merchant in Exchange, Penn.; Hal C., also married, and a merchant in Mooresburg, Penn.; Stewart, a clerk in his father’s store, and Charles, at school. In 1878 Mr. WELLIVER married Adelaide CONDON, a native of Philadelphia, Penn. Mr. and Mrs. WELLIVER are members of the Baptist Church. He is a Democrat, but votes the Independent ticket.      The 1860 census lists a John B. Welliver, 33 living in Anthony Twp., Montour Co., PA. He has a wife, Sarah,32; children: Anna, 7; Jane, 6; Mary, 5; Howard, 4; and George, 2. Also living with them is Joseph Fulton, 21, a farm laborer and Catherine Welliver, 15.

     Note: S. J. WELLIVER, of the firm of WELLIVER & COLE, wholesale and retail hardware dealers, Danville, Penn., and East Main Street, Nanticoke, Penn., was born in Montour County, February 3, 1841. His parents, Abraham and Martha (WINDER) WELLIVER, were natives of Pennsylvania, whose ancestors were among the early settlers of the State.

His father, a shoemaker by trade, followed farming all his life, and reared a family of nine children, of whom S. J. is the sixth. Our subject attended the common schools and also Greenwood Seminary at Millville, Penn.

His first occupation was teaching school, with his brother, established a book and stationery store, and two years later merged their business into a general store. They carried on a successful general mercantile trade for several years, when Mr. WELLIVER sold his interest to his brother, and subsequently took charge of the hardware store of Charles H. WATERS, until the latter’s death.

He then clerked in a hardware store one year when he embarked in business on his own account, and a year later formed a partnership with James McCORMICK, which continued for five years, when our subject bought out Mr. McCORMICK’s interest.

In 1883, the present firm of WELLIVER & COLE was established.

Mr. WELLIVER married, in 1866, Elizabeth, daughter of Simeon BEST, and of English origin. Mrs. WELLIVER has borne her husband eight children, seven of whom survive: Warren W. has charge of the branch store at Nanticoke; Mary Martha Carrie, Bertha, Clarence, Lulu, Harry, Jessie J. (deceased), and Frances. Mrs. WELLIVER is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Mr. WELLIVER of the Baptist. In 1865 he enlisted in the One Hundred and Fourth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and served until the close of the war. He is a member of the I. O. O. F., of Danville. In politics he is a Democrat. 1880 census of Danville Boro, Montour Co., PA lists Samuel J. Welliver, 39 a merchant and his family. Also living with him are his wife, Elizabeth W. 33; son, Warren W. 13; Mary Martha, 11; Carrie C., 9; Bertha B. 6; Clarence C. 4; and Lizzie L. 11 months. All born in PA.

The 1900 census of Danville Borough, Montour Co., PA 9 (E.D. 106) lists Samuel Welliver, 59 living at 315 Mill St. His wife, Elizabeth W. 47 b. July 1853; children: Bertha B. b. Sept 1877; Harry H. 17 b ?month 1882; Frances F. March 1886; and son Samuel J. Jr. 12 b. July 1888. Samuel's parents were both born in New Jersey. No occupation is listed for Samuel, but he owns the property. Bertha and Harry are listed as clerks. Samuel and Elizabeth have been married 34 years and had 11 children, 7 of whom are living at the time.

The 1910 Census of Danville Borough, Montour Co. PA (E.D. 45, Visit 18) lists Samuel J. Welliver, Sr. 69 and his family: wife, Elizabeth W. 68; sons Harry H. 25; and Samuel J. Jr., 23. They live at 312-313 Mill Street. They have been married 44 years; they had 11 children, 7 of whom were still living at the time. The enumerator wrote that Sam's parents were both born in New Jersey. All others born in PA. Sam's occupation is illegible; however, it is believed that he co-owned a hardware store. His sons, Harry and Sam, Jr. work in the hardware store.

     The 1910 census lists Edwin C. Welliver, 59 living on Sidler Hill in Mahoning Twp., Montour County, PA (E.D. 50, Visit 50, Sheet 3B). Also in the household are his wife, Sarah E. 55 and daughter, Martha E. 33 single. They have been married 35 years and 2 of 2 children are living. Edwin is a bricklayer and owns his home.

The 1930 census lists Edwin C. Welliver, 79 and widowed living on Sidler Hill, Mahoning Twp., Montour Co., PA with his son-in-law John A. Diehl, 48 and daughter, Eleanor, 50. Also living with them is Edwin's daughter, Martha E. McClellan, 53 and married. Edwin is a gardener at a hospital. All born in PA.

     The 1900 census list Clarence J. Welliver, 30 living in Jordan Twp. Lycoming Co. PA. He is a farm laborer. Also living in the household are his wife Henrietta, 28 b. August 1871; children, Raymond E., 9 b. Apr. 1891; Hulda E. 7, b. Mar 1892; William F. b. May 1895; Warren M. 2 b. Sept. 1897; and Luella B. 2 mo. b. Dec. 1899. All were born in PA. Clarence and Henrietta have been married 10 years and 5 of 5 children are living. He rents his house.

The 1910 census lists Clarence C. Welliver, 39 living in Pine Twp., Columbia Co. PA (E.D. 33, Visit 68, sheet 7B). Living with him are his wife, Henrietta, 38; son Raymond D. 19; W. Frank 14; Warren M. 12; daughter Emma 8; Vera M. 5; son George H. less than one year; and mother Sarah E. 70. (According to other records, Clarence's mother's name was Elizabeth; this could be Henrietta's mother). Sarah had 10 children, 7 of whom are living at the time. Clarence and Henrietta have been married 20 years, they had 11 children, 7 whom are still living at the time. Clarence is a farmer and owns his farm. Raymond is a laborer doing odd jobs. All born in PA.
