Individual Note: The ship's manifest for the Donau having departed from Bremen, Germany arrived on July 27, 1885 in New York lists Franz Staufer, 50, a farmer; his wife, Katherina, 47; and the following children: son, Johann, 6.5 years; daughters, Maria, 4.5 years; and Johanna, 3. The place of origin list listed as Austria. Their intended destination is New York.
The 1900 Federal Census for Harrison Twp., Hand Co., South Dakota lists a Frederick Staufer, 65 b. Oct 1834 and Catherine, 62 b. May 1838. The Staufers were all born in Austria. They have been married 30 years with 4 of 6 children living. The Staufers immigrated in 1885 and have been here 15 years. (June 25, 1900; E.D. 168; Sheet 6A)
The 1910 Federal Census of for Plato Twp., Hand Co., South Dakota lists a Frank Stauffer, 76, and his wife, Kate, 73 living with an Anton Leitner and his wife Bertha. Frank and Katherine have been married 40 years with 4 of 6 children living. They both immigrated in 1885. They were both born in (Aust) Germany. Frank's employment is listed as "own account". Frank is listed as the step father of Anton and Katherine is listed as the mother of Anton. Anton immigrated in 1884. Bertha immigrated in 1885. (May 13-14, 1910; E.D. 211; Sheet 10A)

Elma E. Waltz, 95, of 832 Lick Run Road, Williamsport, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, at the Williamsport Hospital. Born Feb. 18, 1910, in Eldred Township, she was a daughter of Jonathon and Estella Low Kurtz.

Two Killed, Three Critically Hurt in Crash
Warrensville Men Die as Two Autos Crash near City
Benjamin Kiess, 70 and his son, Stabler, 23, killed as cars collide headon early last evening on Loyalsock Road near Farragut. Both vehicles extensively damaged. Elmer Kurtz, Leslie Houseknecht, and Raymond Marshall critically injured. Plan Inquest.

Elmer Kurtz Being Tried for Involuntary Manslaughter
The case being tried was that of Elmer Kurtz of Warrensville, charged with involuntary manslaughter. The case grows out of an automobile accident on September 3 last (1937), in which three persons were killed on the Loyalsock Road near the Makon. (more)

Verdict this Morning
The case of Elmer Kurtz charged with involuntary manslaughter was resumed this before Judge Thomas A. Crichton. The contention of the defense was that the left front tire of the Kurtz car blew caused the car to swerve and collide with the Marshall car, Kurtz sustained a fractured skull and does not remember what happened. The case went to the jury at three o'clock and a sealed verdict will be brought in this morning...more....

Kurtz Appeals
The jury case of Elmer Kurtz of Montoursville R.D. No. 2, charged with involuntary manslaughter, brought in a verdict of guilty on three counts. His attorney at once made a motion for arrest of judgement and a new trial.

Harold A. Kurtz, 86, of 2665 Northway Road, Loyalsock Twp., died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, at the Williamsport Hospital.
He was born Aug. 1, 1919, in Eldred Twp., a son of Jonathon and Estella Lowe Kurtz.
He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Loyalsock Twp., and retired from Stroehman’s Bakery after 36 years of service.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing and woodworking.
On Jan. 3, 2006, he celebrated his 63rd wedding anniversary with his wife, the former Rita M. Fox.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Carol A. Simcox of Hawkinsville, Ga., Patricia M. (Thomas) Crossley and Laura L. Weber, both of Williamsport; a sister, Madeline Koser of Montoursville; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2510 Northway Road, Loyalsock Twp., with the Rev. Beverly D. Cotner, his pastor, officiating. Friends will be received on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Saint Anthony’s Center, 125 East Willow St., Williamsport PA 17701.
Arrangements are by Spitler Funeral Home, Montoursville.
