Alias:   William /Coleman/

Immigration:
     Date:   24 JUL 1635
     Place:   Massachusetts from Gravesend, England

Individual Note:
William COLEMAN is believed to be the Immigrant Ancester of the Southold, New York, Coleman's. According to family legend, he was heir to an estate. Through the instigation of his brother George's brother-in-law, he was one of 260 transported to the Colonies on July 24,1635 aboard the ASSURANCE from Gravesend, England at the age of 16 years. The ship was supposed to debark in Virginia, but according to the published genealogy of the REED family, in which it is shown that WILLIAM REED came over on the same voyage as WILLIAM COLEMAN, the ship went to Boston, Massachussetts. The statement in the passenger list that the passengers on board were being transported to Virginia probably indicates that the ship's destination was changed enroute. Emigration to New England was at first encouraged by the king and his servile ministry, doubtless with a view of getting rid of the men who could not rest under the proceedings of an arbitrary government. But in 1634 the royal government resolved to deprive New England of its chartered rights, to send a royal governor to that country, and as far as possible to stop the emigration to the American strand. As a consequence of this, many persons embarked ostensibly for Virginia, but really for Massachusetts. According to family lore, WILLIAM was in dentured to a currently unidentified planter and later married the planter 's daughter (apparently the second WILLIAM's mother). WILLIAM COLMAN, planter, appears in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts in 1654. A rock on the northerly side of Rockport road perpetuates his name. There is no direct documented tie between him and his presumed son, William, who appears at Southold, in the 1670's. However, Coleman tradition ties his descendents and those of his second wife, Bridget Jeggles Rowe, which supposedly lends credence to his traditional role as the immigrant ancestor. In 1656, when it is recorded that John Rowe, who settled near the Farms, was possessed of a "mind to set his house on fire and run away by ye light" giving as a reason, disinclination "to live longer among such a company of hell hounds." The house of William Colman, who resided near the Farms was burned, probably the first in town. William's first wife apparently died shortly after the birth of their son and he married Bridget Jeggles, daughter of William and Mary Jeggles and widow of the before mentioned John Rowe on November 14, 1662. Bridget died on May 16, 1680. On May 4, 1667, he sold a dwelling house and six acres of upland and in the harbor "between the great swamp on the west and the highway on the south leading fr om the middle bridge and going to Little Good Harbour". This description points to the present High Street as the location for this house, the first ever mentioned in that section of town.
