Obituary from the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, Friday, April 27, 2007

Allan S. Hunter

Allan S. Hunter, 85, of Montoursville, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at the Gatehouse, Williamsport.

He and his wife of nearly 60 years, the former Gertrude E. Karschner, were married Oct. 4, 1947, in the Fairfield United Methodist Church by his uncle, the Rev. Ralph Hinkleman. Allan was a member of Fairfield United Methodist Church for 56 years.

Born in Williamsport on Sept. 11, 1921, he was a son of the late John A. and Elsie (Schultz) Hunter.

Following graduation from Montoursville High School in 1939, Allan served his country in the U. S. Army Air Force. He was stationed in the western Pacific during World War II from July 1942 until Dec. 1945, where he was an airplane armorer. Upon returning from the Pacific, he trained and worked under the G.I. Bill at the former J. H. Larson and A. Dale Harris companies, where he learned the floor and wall covering trade.

In 1970 the new McCall Middle School was built in Montoursville, and he became their maintenance man for 16 years until retiring in 1986.

His greatest joy was interacting with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He found contentment in taking care of the home he mostly built and mowing and gardening the few acres surrounding it.

Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, Stephen A. and wife, Susan of Montoursville and John W. and wife, Kathi of Horseheads, New York; one daughter, Barbara Kressly of Williamsport; one sister, Lois Martin and husband, James of Piscataway, New Jersey; five grandchildren, Crystal Millard and husband, Tim, Stephen Hunter Jr. and wife, Alison, Michael Hunter, Brian Hunter and Chad Hunter; and three great-grandchildren, Ethan and Abbey Millard and Seth Allan Hunter.

In addition to his parents, Allan was predeceased by three brothers, John, formerly of Hendersonville, N.C., Robert, formerly of Baltimore, Md., and Henry, formerly of Easton, and an infant sister, Ruth.

As per his wishes there will be no viewing or funeral; however, there will be a memorial service at his church, 833 Fairfield Church Road, Montoursville, on Tuesday, May 1, at 11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Constance A. Waugh, pastor of the Heilman-Warrensville United Methodist Churches, and his cousin, the Rev. Richard Hinkelman.

The family will provide the flowers and suggests contributions be made to the Gatehouse. Please make checks payable to “Providence Health System Foundation” c/o Gatehouse, 1001 Grampian Boulevard, Williamsport, PA 17701.

Arrangements are being handled by Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy.
