Iris S. Taylor
Iris S. Taylor, 90, formerly of Picture Rocks, died Monday, Oct. 30, 2006, at Valley View Nursing Center.

Born May 2, 1916, in Penn Township, Lycoming County, she was a daughter of Andrew and Harriet Merrill Shaner. Her husband of 48 years, Morton H. Taylor, died Feb. 21, 1987.

Iris was a graduate of Hughesville High School Class of 1934, and she attended college while living in New York City. In 1978 Iris retired from American Home Foods in Milton after having worked there for 20 years.

Iris was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Hughesville and was dedicated to her family. She was also an avid wrestling fan who supported her sons and grandsons on there endeavors in this sport as well.

Surviving are two sons, Edward M. (Carolyn) Taylor of Hughesville and Keith B. (Patricia) Taylor of Bloomsburg; a daughter, Mary (Stan) Buddendorf of Montoursville; a son-in-law, Marty Epstein of Waverly, N.Y.; ten grandchildren, Stephen, Mark and James McCoy, Michelle Bohlin, Drew and Brett Taylor, Tracy Wilson, Todd Epstein and Teal Epstein, and Keith Brady Taylor; and 12 great grandchildren.

Iris was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Epstein; a grandson, Harry Epstein; four brothers, Stephen, Ellis, Tracy and Woodrow Shaner; and a sister, Elizabeth Peters.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. G. Edward Corcelius officiating. Burial will follow in Picture Rocks Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Howard P. Shaner

VETERAN

Howard P. Shaner, 78, of Hughesville, died on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006. He and his wife, the former Relda Mae Newman, celebrated 57 years of marriage this past Aug. 26.

Howard was born in Williamsport on August 23, 1928, a son to the late Steven and Alberta (Myers) Shaner.

Howard was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He owned and operated ‘‘Shaner’s ARCO’’ station in Hughesville during the 1960’s and 1970’s. He also retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation as a truck driver after 12 years of service.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge #299 F&AM, Muncy.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Barbara (Larry ) Kile of Hughesville, Laura (Theodore) Kurtz of Montoursville; one brother, Lester Shaner of Montgomery; two sisters, Vivian Kellendar of Muncy, and Jean Straight of Ft. Littleton; three grandchildren, Nathan Buck, Kelly Buck and Laurie Kurtz.

He is preceded in death by a sister, Betty Woods.

A memorial service will be held Saturday 2 p.m. at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville with his pastor, the Rev. Gregory Davidson, Pastor of the Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating.

The family will provide the flowers and suggest memorial contributions be made in Howard’s name to the Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, in care of Arlene Barto, 1056 Beaver Lake Road, Hughesville, PA 17737.

C. Lester Hofer

C. Lester ‘‘Mike’’ Hofer, 92, formerly of Hughesville, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, at Valley View Nursing Center.

Born July 16, 1914, in Montoursville, he was a son of Harry I. and Annie M. Miller Hofer. His wife of 48 years, Ruby Ruth Minier, died Sept. 6, 1986.

Mike was a graduate of the Montoursville High School Class of 1932. He retired in 1963 from Carey McFalls, Montoursville and purchased the Loyalsock Hotel. He and his wife owned and operated the Hotel until 1976.

Mike was a member of numerous organizations in the community, including the Willing Hand Hose Company, the Eurecka Lodge 335 F&AM, the Williamsport Consistory, a life member of the Democratic Club, a charter member of both the Muncy Valley Moose and the Warrensville Lions Club.

Surviving are three sons, James L. and Kitty Hofer of Montoursville, Roy M. and Rose Marie Hofer of Utah and Paul I. and Kay Hofer of Montoursville; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Mike was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde I. Hofer and a sister, M. Lorene Peerman.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. Michael Swimley officiating. Burial will follow in Twin Hills Memorial Park. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The family will provide the flowers and suggest memorial contributions to the Willing Hand Hose Company, 821 Broad St., Montoursville, PA 17754.
