Two Local Men Wound, Third Missing
Reports of two local soldiers wounded in action and one missing were received Wednesday.
Cpl. Marlin E. Mahlin, 21, a truck driver with the engineers has been missing in Glegium since December 21, his wife, Mrs. Betty Collins Marlin (sic Mahlin), 733.5 Grace Street, was notified Wednesday morning.
William S. Collins, 21, suffered wounds in the leg and side during aciton on Lyele Nov 4 and is now in a hospital in New Guinea. His wife, Mrs. Shirley Collins, 2341 Grand St. received a letter from Private Collins' chaplain.
Pvt. Harry S. Derr, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Derr of 480 Jefferson St, was wounded Dec 21 during actionon Leyte Island according to notification received by his parents. It is believed he was struck by a machinegun bullet in the left leg just below the knee.
Mrs. Walther H. Shaffer, 421 Woodland Avenue received word that her brother Pfc. Melvin E. Laubach, 24, of Espy, who was serving with the infantry parachute unit, was killed in action in Belgium Jan 5.

John W. Shaner Sr.
John W. Shaner Sr., 63, of Unityville, died Saturday, July 21, 2007, at the Muncy Valley Hospital Emergency Room after being stricken at home.
Born February 23, 1944, in Moreland Township, he was a son of Ernest W. and Mary M. Moore Shaner. He and his wife, the former Viola M. Stackhouse, celebrated 39 years of marriage on March 15.
John was employed at the former Anton Waldmann and retired in 2004 from Del-Monte Pet Food in Bloomsburg. He was a life member of the Lairdsville Fire Company, having served for over 43 years. John enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing and playing cards.
Surviving, in addition to his wife and mother, are a son, John W. (Suzy) Shaner Jr. of Unityville; two daughters, Cindy Lee (Chris Hall) Shaner of Muncy Valley and Sandy Sue Shaner of Unityville; two sisters, Linda (Bill) Snyder and Genna (Gary) Shaner, both of Muncy; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with Pastor Cynthia Gunter officiating. Burial will follow in Franklin “Stone Heap” Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Charles L. Umpstead
Charles L. Umpstead, 79, of Frederick Drive, Watsontown, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2007 at home.
Born May 20, 1928 in Montgomery, he was the son of the late LeRoy and Clair (Barto) Umpstead. On March 31, 1951 he married the former Mary D. Macciocca and they have celebrated 56 years of marriage.
A 1946 graduate of Montgomery High School, Charles served in the US Coast Guard from March of 1947 until retiring in 1967. He attained the rank of Master Chief Engineman E-9 and served as an inspector for Navy and Coast Guard ships and a lighthouse operator in Alaska and Connecticut. He also served actively during the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. Following retirement from the Coast Guard, he was employed at Philco/Ford Corp. until 1977. He also owned and operated Spring Garden Market in Allenwood from 1973 to 1978, and later Charles’ Meat and Subs in Watsontown from 1984 to 1988.
He was a member of the Watsontown American Legion Post 323, and a former member of the Watsontown Fire Company.
He enjoyed traveling and attending shows, bowling and Western-style square dancing. He followed most spectator sports and at one time competed in competitive rifle and pistol matches.
Surviving besides his wife, Mary are a son and daughter-in-law, Gary L. and Debra Umpstead of Williamsport; a daughter, Sharon L. Umpstead at home; three granddaughters, Jamie Hanford, Hughesville, Heather Reese, NC, and Kristin Umpstead, Williamsport; three step-great grandchildren; a brother, Richard Umpstead of Montgomery and a sister, Freda Yeagle of Allenwood.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Brooks Funeral Home, 124 Main Street, Watsontown with Pastor Donald W. Miller of White Hall Baptist Church officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Watsontown Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions in his memory to either White Hall Baptist Church, 955 Whitehall Road, Danville, PA 17821 or the Gatehouse Hospice, 1100 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport, PA 17701.

Sara Ida “Sally” Simcox, 88, of 147 Highland Drive, Hughesville, and a guest at Manor Care Health Services, South, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2007, at the home.
She was born March 1, 1919, in Williamsport, a daughter of Glen N. and Eva Blanchard Simcox.
Sally served during WW II in the A.A.F. where she earned the rank of First Sergeant, and had retired from Howe, Barnes and Johnson Inc., a financial brokerage firm in Chicago ILL.
She is survived by three nieces; Jacqueline Cohen of Colorado, Barbara Johns of Hughesville, and Judy Reed. She is also survived by a longtime friend, Beverly Litt of Darien, ILL.
She is predeceased by her parents; a brother, Paul, and three sisters, Jean Egli, Edith Cole, and Hazel Meyers, and by a nephew, Richard Egli.
Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. The family will provide the flowers. Contributions may be made to the charity of ones choice.
Arrangements are by Spitler Funeral Home, Montoursville.
