     The 1920 Federal Census lists Joe LITNAUNCHEN, 38, and his wife, Mattie, 35 living at 20 Fourth Avenue, Rep. Dist. 6. (Claymont), New Castle Co., Delaware. Joe and Mattie were born in Austria, their mother tongue is Ukrainian. Both immigrated in 1906. Their children are: Annie, 8, b. in PA; Stephen, 6; b. in Missouri; William, 5, b. in Ohio; and Tilly, 11 months b. in PA. Joe is a laborer in chemical work. Neither Joe nor Mattie can read or write English. He rents the house. (January 13&14, 1920; E.D. 205; Sheet 10A).

The 1930 Federal Census lists Joe LETANANCHYN, 48, and his wife, Marry, 45 living at 317 Manner Road (sic), Valley Twp., Chester Co., PA. Joe was born in Rushia (sic) and Marry were born in Hosleigh (sic), their mother tongue is Ukrainian. Both immigrated in 1906. Their children are: Anna, 18, b. in PA; Stevam,16; b. in Maryland; William, 15, b. in Maryland; Tilely, 11 b. in PA; John, 9; Peterr, 7; Walter; 2; Elmer, 2 months . Joe is take-off working in a tube mill?. Neither Joe nor Mattie can read or write English. He rents the house for $6 per month. (January 13&14, 1920; E.D. 205; Sheet 10A).

Jul 1893; Edward D., 2 b. Jun 1899. Also living with them is Joseph Mahlin, father of Ellsworth, age 65, b. Aug 1834, widowed, a jeweller; and a brother, Edward Mahlin, 28, b. Living with him are his wife, Irene, 48; children: Joseph, 27; Lillian, 24; Irene, 21; Ellsworth, 19; Edward, 11; and Howard, 7. All six children are living, Howard and Irene have been married 28 years. Howard is a blacksmith at a carriage factory. Joseph works as a machinist in a electric factory; Lillian is a counter at a paper mill; Irene is a cutter at a paper mill and Ellsworth is a driver of a grocery wagon. Howard is in school. All born in Pennsylvania expect Irene's parents were born in Delaware. (April 19, 1910; E.D. 1146; Sheet 4B)

The 1920 Federal Census lists Ellsworth Mahlin, 58, head of the household and his family living at 2816 Pratt Street, (45th Ward), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Living with him are his wife, Irene D., 57; sons: Joseph C., 36, single; Edward D., 21, single; Howard D., 17, single; and daughter, Irene W. Bobbing, 33, married; and son-in-law, Peter Bobbing, 24, married. Ellsworth is a blacksmith; Joseph is a shoe cutter in a factory, Edward is an electrician in a mill, Howard is a clerk at a paper mill, and Peter Bobbing is a machinist in a factory.      The 1880 Federal Census lists J.C. Mahlin, 46 and his family living at 30 West Fourth Street, Chester City, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Living with him are his wife, Ellen, 43; sons, Alfred P., 21; Ellsworth, 19; Edward, 9; and daugther, Sidney M.A., 16. J.C. Mahlin and his son Alfred are laborers. Ellsworth is a blacksmith. The other children are in school. (June 2 & 3, 1880; E.D. 20; page 6).

[Research Note: coincidentally, in 1880, the Mahlins live adjacent to the William Burk family, whose daughter Irene Burk, would eventually married Ellsworth Mahlin].

     The 1850 Federal Census lists William Burk, 26 and his family living in Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware. Also, living with him are his wife, Rebecca P. 30; son, James, 4 and daughter, Rachel R. 3. William and his children were born in Delaware and Rebecca was born in Maryland. William's occupation is illegible but possibly a Sizer (most of the neighbors seem to be employed in a cloth mill). (September 5, 1850; p. 378)

The 1860 Federal Census lists William Burk, 39 and his family living in Chester Middle Ward, Delaware Co., PA. Living with him are his wife, Rebecca, 35; son, James, 15; daughter, Rachel, 13; son, Elwood, 9; Alfred, 4 and Samuel, 4 months. William is a spinner, James is a piecer. William's personal belonging are worth $200. All born in Delaware, except Samuel who was born in PA. (July 2, 1860; p. 108)

The 1870 Federal Census lists William Burk, 49, and his family living in the 197th District, Middle Ward of Chester City, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania. Living with him are his wife, Rebecca, 47; sons, James, 25; Alfred, 13, Samuel, 10, and daughter Irene , 7. William and his son, Alfred work in the cotton mill. Rebecca cannot read or write, William cannot write. William and Rebecca were born in Maryland. The children were all born in Delaware. (July 7, 1870; p. 40)

The 1880 Federal Census lists William Burk, 66 and his family living at 28 West Fourth Street, Chester City, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Also living with him are a servant, Henrietta Manuel, 72; son, Grant, 20; and daughter, Irena, 16. William Burk is a skinner, Grant works in a cotton factory and is listed as an idiot. William was born in Maryland, Grant and Irena were born in Pennsylvania. (June 2 & 3, 1880; E.D. 20; page 6).
