After leaving the 43rd Militia Infantry, Ambrose must have returned home to New Jersey to re-enlist.
Ambrose S. Winder served in the Civil War with allegiance to the Union. He re-enlisted as a private on September 1, 1863 at the age of only 17. He served New Jersey enlisted Batty D Co. 1st LA Reg NJ which was a light artillary unit, aka Woodbury's Light Battery D, 4th Artillery. The Unit Mustered out at Richmond, VA on June 17, 1865. US Army Register of Enlistments 1798-1914
Winder, Ambrose S. - enlisted on September 28, 1867 At Harrisburg, PA by Capt. Jewitt, for a period of three years, born in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, age 21, occupation: lumberman; gray eyes, black hair, ruddy complexion, 5 feet 7.5 inches tall; Division, US Inf. Remarks: Des. Oct. 30, 1864; Sec. Enl.
It appears that Ambrose S. Winder(s) was also known as Stewart Winder(s). We know this because he is listed on his daughter, Annie's marriage certificate as parents: Stewart and Catherine. He is also referenced by a historical book listing Civil War soldiers who lived in Shrewsbury Township of Sullivan County, PA. This Stewart Winder family then appears in the 1880 census for Elizabeth, Union Co., NJ, as Stewart, Catherine, Catherine, Victoria and Louisa. (This researcher believes that Louisa should be Annie or Roseann.)

The 1870 census shows a Stewart Winder as in inmate of the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. This Stewart Winder's age is listed as 26, which matches our Ambrose's birth year exactly. According to Northumberland County Records he was arrested in 1868 for burglary and larceny and sentenced to 3 years in the State Penitentiary. His prison record states that he is a laborer, married, is 5'6'' tall, wears a 91/2 shoe size, has grey eyes and black hair, has mole on thumb, prisioner #6110. This incarceration could explain the gap in the ages of his children Katherine, who was born in 1866 and Victoria born in 1872. He was released from prison on April 4, 1871.
The 1870 census also lists his wife, Catherine, daughter Catherine and mother Phoebe living in Moreland Twp., Lycoming Co. PA.
The 1880 Federal Census lists Stewart Winder, 35 and his family living at 19 Washington Avenue, Elizabeth, Union Co., NJ. Living with him are his wife, Catherine, 30; daughters, Catherine, 12; Victoria, 8; and Louisa,2. Stewart and his parents were born in NJ. All others born in PA. Stewart is a laborer. The National Archives Civil War Pension file for Ambrose S. Winder states that he applied for his Civil War Pension on December 8, 1891, but was denied due to the fact that he had deserted his unit in 1864. The file states that he was in the hospital at Camp Barry D.C. during the winter of 1863-1864 for measles and scarlet fever. He walked away from the hospital in the spring of 1864 never to return. The quote from the War Department "The rolls show that Ambrose S. Winder Batty D.N.J. L.A. mentioned in the preceding indorsement, was enrolled 1 September 1863 and deserted from furlough granted April 26, 1864 at hospital Camp Barry, Washington, D.C. and never returned. Application for removal of charge of desertion has been denied." Dated May 28, 1892.
A physical examination was conducted on June 8, 1892 in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. In general the findings were that his claim of Cholera, asthma and memory loss was not found, but he did have rheumatic joints and dyspepsia.
Ambrose S. Winder wrote a letter to the pension service to ascertain the status of his pension. It reads: "Unityville Pa November 14 , 1892.
Mr. George B. Raum (Stamped Pension Office November 17, 1892)
Dear Sir - in relation to claim number 1078105 Ambrose S. Winder Private 4th Independent Battery N.J. LA filed January 21, 1892. I was examined before the bord at Williamsport PA and my atturney N.W. Fitzgerald informed me that all the evidence was in waiting the action of the Department. Since then I have herd nothing of it. Please inform me weather my claim is still pending or has been rejected and oblige. Yours Truly, Ambrose S. Winder "
The Pension office wrote back on November 23, 1892 requesting a list of officers and comrads of the 4th Ind. Battery N.J. LA. The list was furnished on December 2, 1892. No other subsequent documents are found in the file.
This researcher believes that he started using the name "Stewart Winder" to avoid arrest for desertion. It is theorized that he was arrested for desertion after application for his Civil War Pension was denied. More research must be conducted to prove this theory.

from the Williamsport Sunday Grit - Sunday, March 31, 1929. A lengthy story ran detailing the disappearance of William "Buffalo" Smithgall, 70, in the mountainous region above Wallis Run and the Loyalsock Creek. He had last been seen four days before by a school boy and had stopped at a school house to give a prized possession to the teacher with the message to deliver it to his friend and relatives that he wouldn't have need of it for some time. A search party was organized with bloodhounds. It is feared that Mr. Smithgall's age and frail state would not allow his survival in the wilds for long.
