Individual Note:
Nearly died of scarlet fever as a child, 5 yo. While she lay ill, she asked for some pepperoni sausage which was hung to dry, the doctor said OK, for she was going to die. But she recovered and lived to be 84. Giovanina was 5 yrs younger than Carmela. Both girls were fairly well educated for that period of time. Giovanina had a teaching certificate.
In those days, men in America who wanted wives would send money for their passage to America, but Giovanina did not care for the man who sent her money, and her father returned the man's money after her emigration near the end of the 19th century. She fell in love with Vito Masi (Massie), whom she saw in church and wanted to marry him.
Giovanina had seven children. Her three sons all died in infancy.
