     The 1900 census of College Twp., Centre Co., PA lists William Smithgall, 26 (b. Mar 1884) and his wife, Lillie, 24 (b. May 1886) and thier children Ella (b. Sept 1892), Ernest (Jan 1894) and Alice (b. Jul 1898). They have been married ten years with 3 of 3 children living. William works at a saw mill and rents his house. [The birth years for the parents must be incorrect because they would only be 16 and 14 at the time of the census].

The 1920 census of Pine Creek Twp., Clinton Co. PA lists William Smithgall, 51, widowed and his family. Also living with him are his mother, Sarah, 76 and widowed; and his daughter, Evelyn, 15. William is a lumberman in a mill. He rents his house. One house away lives a Thomas Smithgall. (January 22, 1920; E.D. 21; Sheet 11A)
