Obituary from the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, Tuesday August 22, 2006

Helen Van Pelt Smithgall Hughes
Helen Van Pelt Smithgall Hughes, age 96, passed away at her home in DeForest, Wisconsin, on August 14, 2006, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.

Helen was born on April 21, 1910, in Austin, Pennsylvania, to John Daniel and Romelia (Van Pelt) Smithgall.

She was a loving mother, wife, daughter and sister, an accomplished pianist and a gifted writer who, throughout her life entertained friends and family with her knowledge, talent, and sense of humor. She enjoyed life to it fullest.

Helen spent most of her life in Pennsylvania, relocating to Wisconsin 28 years ago to be with her daughter.

A graduate with honors from Williamsport High School, her academic excellence earned her a scholarship to Bucknell University, her father's alma mater. She epitomized the concept of life-long learning. An avid reader and lover of words, she always had a dictionary by her side. In later years, as her eyesight diminished, she enjoyed her old movie favorites via the Turner Classics. She had a special interest in researching her genealogy and, with the help of relatives traced her American roots and heritage back to President John Adams and Abigail Adams.

In an era when women had to choose between a profession and children, Helen's choice was family. She raised her four children with the same energy and dedication that she had previously put into her academics and music. There was always laughter around her kitchen table. She was a lover of all things beautiful, appreciated the complexities of life, and was selfless and nurturing in her relationships.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren; three daughters, Alice Hughes Watkins Kimport, and Dr. Meredith Hughes Bakke (Gregg) of DeForest, Gale Andrea Hughes Edwards (Jay), of Baton Rouge, La., a son, Richard Pryde Hughes Jr. (Sandy), of Las Vegas, and grandchildren; Melanie Bryn Edwards, Kjersten Brynn Bakke and Kjell Nelson Bakke, of DeForest, and Richard Pryde Hughes III and Jocelyn Pryde Hughes, of San Diego. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, her brother, Drew, her much loved husband, Richard Pryde Hughes, and her adored grandson, Aaron Drew Richter Watkins.

We celebrate and honor the life of our mother, Helen, and are eternally grateful for her gift of life to us. The beating heart of a loving family is silent now but she will continue to speak to us through her indomitable spirit, her glorious written words, and her legacy of unconditional love.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date in Wisconsin and a special gathering of her children is planned for next summer in Pennsylvania to celebrate her life.
