Note for:   Fred Sharr,   1810 - 13 JUL 1878         Index

Individual Note:
From a 8/8/00 e-mail from Harry Smithgall, Jr. "As to the Sharrs. The parents of John Frederick's wife are buried in the Chrisrian Hall cemetery. Her parents are buried on the mountain near Warrensville in a grave marked by two medium sized stones, on what is now known as the William Chaapel farm.
Go through Warrensville headed northwest. Soon you will come to a dirt road headed north. Soon another. Take that second road up the mountain. At the top you will come to some cleared farm land. That is known as the William Chaapel farm and is where the Sharrs lived back then. There may be a lady
by the name of Lura Hartman (deceased abt. 2001) in that area who could help you find where the graves are located.
The next farm to the west, known as the Chauncey Chaapel farm, was where John Frederick lived and raised his family."

There is some confusion in the 1850 census as the Sharr family appears to be listed twice. Once at the beginning place in the township and then again at the end of the township.

The 1850 census of Cascade Twp. Lycoming Co. PA (PAGE 196) lists a Fred Sharr, 40; wife, Hannah, 35; daughters, Rosannah, 12; Barbara, 8; and son, Daniel 6. Also living with them is Abraham Sharr, 68 and his wife, Rosannah, 65. Fred Sharr has a property value of $500 and Abraham, $100; both are farmers. All born in PA. They live near the David & Abraham Walse (Waltz) families and the George Brewer family. John and Mary Blessing live closeby. p. 196. Further down the page, another Fred Sharr, 10 lives with the William Conden (Cowden) family.

The 1850 census of Cascade Twp. Lycoming Co., PA (PAGE 201A) lists Abram Sharr, 72, his wife Rosannah, 70. Also, Fred Sharr, 36 and Hannah, 40 with children Rosannah 18, Barbara 13, Fred 10, and Daniel 5. Also living with them is a D. Gotschall, 23. Abram and his wife Rosannah were born in Germany. Fred Sharr was born at sea. All others were born in PA. This second set of dates seems to correspond better with gravestone dates.

The 1873 Map of Eldred Twp lists D. Sharr living north of Warrensville, at the fork of a creek coming off the mountain and Pleasant Run (Mill Creek). This is believed to be called "Chaapel Mountain Road" currently.

The 1880 Federal Census lists Daniel SHAR, 34 and his wife, Rosannah, 37 living in Lewis Twp., Lycoming Co., PA. Their children are Florence, 15; Louisa 13 and Alva, 11. Daniel works on a farm. They have 17 boarders, all have different names. (June 19, 1880; E.D. 52; Page 30).

The 1910 Census lists Daniel C. Sharr, 69, Divorced, living in Upper Fairfield Twp., Lycoming Co., PA. Living with him are his housekeeper, Margaret M. Lynch, 69 and a granddaughter, Ruth V. Lynch, 8. Also living with them is a boarder, James F. Guisewhite, 25. (This appears to be the immediate Loyalsockville area). Daniel does odd jobs. (April 15, 1910; E.D. 38; Sheet 6B)

from the Gazette & Bulletin, July 9, 1912
Daniel Sharr Fell Dead While Working in Field, was apparently just starting in for dinner when stricken with paralysis and died.
Daniel Shaar, aged sixty-eight years, was found dead in a field on the farm of George Houck at Loyalsockville at noon yesterday. Mr. Sharr had been employed for some years on the Houck farm and resided alone to it. He was working in the fields yesterday morning as usual but did not come home at dinner time.
A little girl was sent to call him but could not see him. She returned for Mr. Houck and they went to the field together. They found Mr. Sharr lying dead just behind the horses. He had a Basket in his hand and had apparently just started for dinner when he was stricken by death.
The cause of death is paralysis. The coroner, Hardt, was notified but after examining the case decided that an inquest was not necessary.
Mr. Sharr is survived by one son residing in Elmira and who has been notified.
