Obituary: Kevin Knowland, 31, of Talbot, Tenn., was charged with two counts each of homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter, and one count of driving too fast for conditions, troopers said.
They said Knowland, who was moved earlier this week from Hershey Medical Center to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, will be sent a summons to appear for a preliminary hearing on the charges upon his release.
He suffered severe head injuries in the crash and was in satisfactory condition last night.
Troopers said Knowland, driving a J.B. Hunt truck, is accused of ramming the back of a car occupied by James L. and Shirley Smithgall, both of DuBoistown, shortly before 5:30 p.m. Oct. 19, just south of the Ridge Street overpass here.
The Smithgalls' car was stopped at the time behind northbound rush-hour traffic that was backed up for a merger into a single lane just north of Exit 14.
Both husband and wife, ages 60 and 57, were killed instantly as their car was driven into the rear of a second tractor-trailer rig idling in front of them.
