Note for:   John Winder,   19 JAN 1799 - BEF 1890         Index

Individual Note:
The 1830 Census for Trenton, Mercer Co., NJ lists a John Winder and family.
2 males under 5.
1 male 5-10
1 male 30-40
1 female 20-30

The 1860 census has John Winder, 62 living in Jordan Twp. Lycoming Co. with his son John R. Winders. The census was taken Sept. 15, 1860.

The 1860 census has John Winder, 61 a miller living in Hamilton Twp., NJ with his wife, Phoebe, 59 and son Ambrose S. 14. John has $150 in personal property. John and Pheobe were born in PA. Ambrose was born in NJ. Ambrose attends school. The census was taken September 18, 1860. p. 172.

Research Note: Since neither John nor his father Warren can be found in the 1820 census, it is suspected that they live together somewhere in central Pennsylvania.

Research Note: John Winder must have gone to visit his son in Jordan Twp, Lycoming Co. PA with the intent to return to NJ as it was nearly impossible to make the trip from Hamilton Twp., Mercer Co., NJ to Jordan Twp, Lycoming Co., PA in only three days.

Research Note 2: It appears that John Winder named his family according the the Scottish family system. All names are consistent with those of John's ancestors.

[Research Note: Not sure if this is the subject John Winder]
News Story from the Trenton Gazette, June 21, 1870
John Winder was drowned in the canal at Newark on Saturday. His horse backed or fell into the water, and Winder getting entangled in the wheels of the wagon was drowned before he could extricate himself.

Note for:   Phoebe UNKNOWN,   14 MAR 1801 - 4 APR 1874         Index

Individual Note:
The 1870 census states that Phoebe Winder, 69, lives in Moreland Twp. Lycoming Co., PA with a Catherine age 20 and Catherine L. age 1. Census states that all were born in PA. They are keeping house. Phoebe is thought to be the widow of John Winder of NJ and mother of Ambrose "Stewart" Winder. Catherine is thought to be the wife of Ambrose S. "Stewart" Winder. Catherine L. is thought to be the daughter of Catherine and Ambrose Winder.

Research Note: We believe that Pheobe's maiden name was Hamilton according to family lore. Her second born son was named David, which is consistant with the Scottish naming system. There was a David Hamilton b. abt. 1759 in Adams Twp., York Co, PA to a William and Margaret Hamilton.

Pheobe's maiden name could also be Milnor, as her 5th son was William Milnor Winder. There is a Pheobe Milnor, b. 1802 daughter of Mahlon Milnor and Pheobe Merrick in Bucks Co. according to the LDS website.

Note for:   Warren Winder,   BET 1750 AND 1760 - BET 1840 AND 1850         Index

Individual Note:
All of the information on this Warren Winder line was taken from a family bible owned by Mrs. Josephine Ottensman, a granddaughter of William Milnor Winder. The bible was printed in NYC in 1826 by D.G. Bruce.

The 1810 Census for East Bethelehem Twp, Washington Co, PA lists a Warren Winder age over 45, one male 10-16, one female over 45 and two females between 0 and 10 years old. These people correspond to Warren, son: John, wife: Martha, dau: Hannah and another daughter (Martha?).

The 1830 Census lists a Warren Winter in Turbot Twp, Northumberland Co, PA age betw. 50-70 and one female between 15-20 (Martha) and another female betw.50-70 (wife:Martha). [Reseach Note: This places young Martha Winder in the locality to meet W. Abraham Welliver for marriage.]

The 1840 census lists Warren Winder in Forks Twp, Lycoming (now Sullivan Co) PA as betw. 80-90 and one female betw. 70-80, another female betw. 30-40, a female betw. 5-10, and a male betw. 5-10. (p. 1, L. 24). Adjacent neighbors: Richard Biddle, Benjamin Chase, Moses Rogers. Warren is employed in the agricultural trade. Note: The younger woman appears to be a single mother, possibly his daughter but not Martha. Hannah is most likely married to Jeffrey Clarke by this time. The other daughter, Martha, is married to W. Abraham Welliver and living in Anthony Twp. Montour Co. PA at the time.

The significance of this passage is that Moses Rogers was a close neighbor of Warren Winder: from the Sullivan Review 6 March 1879 : Moses ROGERS, died at his home in Forksville, Feb. 18th, aged 72y 10m 4d. Father Rogers has always lived within three rods of the place of his birth a case with scarcely a parallel. He was the last member of family of 18 children and a desc. of one of the earliest settlers of what is now known as Sullivan County. At the time of his birth the place was a wilderness..His disease was asthma, with which he suffered greatly and with much patience. Four days before his death he had a slight stroke of paralysis. (Towanda paper please copy)

Per the Obituary of Eliza Vough Grange, Warren Winder's father was a John Winder who served and died in the Revolutionary War.

After examining the Scottish naming system for the children of this family, it was determined that the names of the children are consistent with their known ancestors and the naming system follows the pattern.

Fause. (June 24, 1880, E.D. 184, p. 17) [Research Note: The 1876 Atlas of Land Ownership for Pine Twp. Research Note: John and Elizabeth must have been married in abt. 1852 in Lycoming Co. Winder, came to Lycoming Co and married there also.
