Obituary: James Smithgall, 97, a furniture maker, contractor, carpentry teacher and artist, died Monday evening at his home, 76 Jackson Drive, after a brief illness.
The well-known local furniture maker began shaping wood when he was 12 years old. He leaves behind numerous handmade grandfather clocks, Windsor chairs and other reproduction furniture, as well as hundreds of woodworking students he trained in the craft.
A 1916 graduate of the former Stevens Trade School, now Stevens State School of Technology, Smithgall taught carpentry at the school for 25 years. He retired from teaching in 1949 to pursue a career in contracting.
He helped build several homes in the School Lane Hills area of Lancaster.
Following his retirement, he was cited by the Stevens Trade School Alumni Association for outstanding service to the school and community, including charity work performed by him and his students for the YMCA, YWCA, the Society for Crippled Children, and other local agencies.
Smithgall signed every piece of furniture he made, and some of his work is on display at Landis Valley Museum.
His chairs, which sell for a minimum of $300, have sold at auctions for more than $1,000.
For the past 1 1/2 years, he has worked with carpentry apprentice and home builder Dan Kepner in a warehouse on Dillerville Road. He never retired fully from woodworking, and continued working five-day workweeks into this year.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served in France during World War I.
He did graduate work in carpentry at Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania.
He was the husband of Helen Gerhart Smithgall, who died in 1970, and Edna Susan Snavely Smithgall, who died in 1992.
Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late James Buchanan and Edith Susan Mowrer Smithgall.
A lifelong resident of the Lancaster area, he was a member of St.
Andrew's United Church of Christ; Lamberton Lodge 476, Free & Accepted Masons; Lancaster Lodge of Perfection; the Harrisburg Consistory, 32nd degree; Zembo Temple Shrine of Harrisburg; and the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.
He is survived by two sons, James J. of Reading and John H. of Philadelphia; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
