Text: Estella Whitmoyer, 100, of Montoursville, died Thursday, September 23, 2010, four months after fulfilling a longtime dream of traveling to Germany and the childhood hometown of her grandmother. The trip was part of a 100th birthday celebration.
Until 22 months ago, when she became a resident of Hillside Assisted Living, she had lived by herself at Route 87 Highway, where she drove a car and mowed her own lawn until she was 98. She was a member of the Community Baptist Church.
Born April 29, 1910, in Upper Fairfield Township, she was the daughter of Mary Jane (Delker) and George Keebler. In her younger years, she worked in a number of factories including C.A. Reed and Syntec, retiring to care for her elderly parents.
She married Earl H. Whitmoyer in 1930. They loved fishing in Canada and traveling to Florida and Arizona. Her beloved husband died in 1990.
She leaves several nieces and nephews, including Robert Whitmoyer of Bloomsburg, with whom she traveled to Germany, and Carl Nolan of South Williamsport. She also leaves several cousins, including John Fink and Ann Hocker of Montoursville, and Molly Costello Daly of Goodview, Va., who also made the recent trip to Germany.
Estella was predeceased by a cousin, LaRue H. Thompson.
Her 100th birthday trip to Germany was actually her second visit to Germany, having made the trip in 1991 with Robert Whitmoyer and family.
A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, September 27, 2010, in the Montoursville Cemetery with Rev. Lynn A. Wheeler officiating. There will be no visitation.
Arrangements are by Spitler Funeral Home, Montoursville.
