Miss Bertha Smithgall, twelve years old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Smithgall of 1118 Washington St., died yesterday morning. She was operated on for appendicitis on Tuesday....more...she will be buried at the Farragut Cemetery. Mr. & Mrs. Smithgall are formerly of Trout Run.

Text:   — SELINSGROVE — Phyllis V. Hoover, 88, of Selinsgrove, formerly of Sunbury, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at the Manor at Penn Village, Selinsgrove.
   
She was born Oct. 10, 1922, in Williamsport, a daughter of the late C. Lyola Sr. and Georgiana (Vandling) Frey. She was married to Robert C. Hoover, who preceded her in death in 2003.
   
She attended Northumberland schools.
   
She formerly was employed as a waitress by the Susquehanna Valley Country Club, later as a clerk at the Holiday Inn, Shamokin Dam, and last as a clerk at the Mill End Store, Port Trevorton.
   
Phyllis was an accomplished seamstress. She enjoyed camping, traveling and antiquing. She devoted her life to caring for her handicapped son, Ronald, who survives.
   
In addition to her son, Ronald, she is survived by three granddaughters and their spouses, Victoria F. and Danny Myers, of Enola, Valerie F. and Alvie Cook, of Selinsgrove, and Kristin G. and Edward Willow, of Millerstown; three great-granddaughters, Jennifer E. Merrell, Jeanette F. Diehl and Stephanie D. Hennessy; one great-grandson, Kenneth D. Myers; six great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Manford Frey, of Rockport, Texas; and two sisters, Geri Hoagland and Audrey Hassinger, both of Sunbury.
   
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Joanne L. Inch; two sisters, Georgianna Keefer Tobias and Elizabeth “Bet” Broome; and two brothers, C.L. Frey Jr. and Frederick E. Frey.
   
Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 309 Water St., Northumberland, followed by the funeral at 2.
   
Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland.
